On October 4th, 2023, nature unleashed its fury upon the tranquil settings of Sikkim, India, through a powerful cloudburst. This severe meteorological event, distinguished by its sudden and immense downpour within a concise period and limited area, initiated catastrophic flash floods in the Lachen Valley, especially in the vicinity of the Teesta River.
The intensity of the cloudburst over the Lhonack Lake, often referred to as the Gleshiyar Lake, which lies in the upper reaches of the Lachen Valley, was nothing short of monumental. The waters cascaded down the steep slopes of Sikkim with alarming speed, taking many residents by surprise.
Exacerbating the disaster, the Chungthang Dam discharged a substantial volume of water. While a comprehensive analysis is underway to ascertain the reason for this release during such a perilous time, the result was an unparalleled wave of destruction.
At the centre of this destruction was the Lachen Valley, known for its untainted beauty and serene waterways. The NH10 roadway, a vital link to several isolated settlements, along with other crucial infrastructure, has been devastated. Bridges, which formerly connected towns and promoted easy communication, were no longer in use, leaving many people stranded and alone.

This catastrophe’s devastating effects on people are tragic. 23 Army servicemen assigned to a unit stationed close to Bardang and Singtam have vanished. As of October 5th, 2023, floods have claimed 14 lives, with 102 people still unaccounted for – a devastating toll. Medical institutions have treated 26 individuals, many of whom sustained severe injuries from the powerful floodwaters that surged to heights of 15 to 20 feet in some areas.
The Sikkim government, recognizing the gravity of the situation, declared the event a ‘disaster.’ They promptly launched rescue missions, working tirelessly to locate the missing and provide assistance to the survivors.
The catastrophe underscores the imperative nature of preparedness:
