Vijay Diwas: India’s Big Win

Vijay Diwas, also known as Victory Day, is a special day in India that celebrates the big win of the Indian Armed Forces over Pakistan in the 1971 Indo-Pak War. Every December 16th, we remember this day as it marks the birth of Bangladesh and the surrender of Pakistani forces.

What Led to the War?

Back then, there were a lot of tensions between East and West Pakistan (which is now Bangladesh and Pakistan). People in East Pakistan wanted independence because of cultural and economic differences, which led to a lot of trouble. The situation got worse, and in 1971, India stepped in to help Bangladesh gain freedom.

The Exciting Bits:

  1. Naval Action – Operation Trident and Python: The Indian Navy did some cool stuff with Operation Trident, where they used missile boats to take on Pakistani ships. Operation Python followed, causing chaos in the Karachi harbor.
  2. Air Support – Airlift of Mukti Bahini: India helped the Bangladeshi liberation forces by flying in tons of support. This made it tough for the Pakistani forces.
  3. On the Ground – Ground Operations: The Indian Army did some serious ground action, winning important battles like the ones at Longewala and Hilli.
  4. The Surrender Moment: Everything changed when Indian forces moved fast, leading to the surrender of Pakistani troops in Dhaka. This surrender brought about the birth of Bangladesh.
