Long-Lasting Disagreement: Israel and Palestine have been in a big argument for a very long time about who gets to live in the same place. It’s not just about where they live; it’s also about their history and religion, especially a special city called Jerusalem.
Israel’s Beginning in 1948: In 1948, Israel officially started as a country. But when that happened, a lot of Palestinians had to leave their homes, or they were forced out.

Mandate System: After World War I, the League of Nations asked Britain to take care of Palestine in 1920. This was after the Ottoman Empire, which used to control the area, fell apart.

Help Jewish people make a home in Palestine. Make sure Palestinian Arabs living there got their rights and needs taken care of. People Moving and Tensions: Britain let many Jewish people move to Palestine, but as more of them came, problems grew between Jews and Arabs. 1936 Arab Revolt: In 1936, Palestinians were very unhappy, and they started a big rebellion against the British rule and Jewish people moving in. Britain was able to stop the rebellion, but it made the bad feelings between Jews and Arabs even stronger.
After the British Left
Britain Leaving: By 1947, the situation had become really complicated and dangerous. Britain decided to leave Palestine and gave the problem to the United Nations.
UN Plan: The United Nations suggested splitting Palestine into two separate countries: one for Jewish people and one for Arabs. Jewish leaders liked the idea, but Arab leaders and nearby Arab countries said no.
War and Ongoing Fighting: Right after Israel became a country in May 1948, a war started between Israel and Arab countries. Even after the war, there have been more fights and times when things got really tense in the region.
Different Opinions About Britain’s Role
What Britain did in this conflict is a big argument. Some think that what Britain did made things worse. They say Britain tried to help Jewish people come to Palestine while also keeping peace with Palestinians, and that was really hard. Others think Britain did its best in a tough situation.
In short, the Israel-Palestine issue is very complicated and goes back a long time. Britain’s role in this story is important, and the choices it made during its time in charge have had a big impact on the ongoing problem.
