On October 10, 2023, something quite dramatic happened in Pakistan. The man who was believed to be the mastermind behind the 2016 Pathankot attack, Shahid Latif, was found dead in mysterious circumstances in his home in Bahawalpur, Pakistan. He led a terrorist group called Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), which had claimed responsibility for the Pathankot attack.

Latif death was marked by multiple gunshot wounds, and it raised a lot of questions. According to Pakistani police, unknown attackers had entered his home and killed him. What makes this even more intriguing is the finger-pointing between India and Pakistan that followed.

India immediately accused Pakistan of orchestrating Latif’s killing,

suggesting it was a “state-sponsored assassination” meant to cover up Pakistan’s involvement in the Pathankot attack. Pakistan, on the other hand, denied any role in Latif’s death, labelling it a “targeted killing” by rival terrorist groups.

The Pathankot attack itself was a major event. Back on January 2, 2016, terrorists stormed the Indian Air Force’s Pathankot Airbase, resulting in the deaths of seven Indian security personnel and six militants. India pointed the finger at Pakistan, claiming that JeM militants had infiltrated from across the border. Pakistan initially denied involvement but later admitted that some of the attackers were indeed Pakistani nationals. This attack significantly strained India-Pakistan relations and led to increased tensions between the two countries.

With Latif’s killing, the situation is expected to become even more complicated. India is likely to demand that Pakistan bring Latif’s killers to justice and may consider retaliatory actions. Pakistan, however, is expected to maintain its denial of involvement and accuse India of trying to destabilize Pakistan.

It’s essential to remember that the death of Latif is not a silver bullet to solve the terrorism issue in the region. There are numerous other terrorist groups in both Pakistan and India and taking down one leader won’t stop them from planning and executing attacks.

The only long-term solution is for India and Pakistan to work together to dismantle these terrorist networks. Sadly, given the current state of relations between the two countries, such cooperation appears unlikely to happen anytime soon. The tension between India and Pakistan remains a complex and ongoing issue, and Latif’s death is just another chapter in this story.
